戦中戦後の混乱に振り回されながらもその日その日を必死に生き抜いていく人々。その群像が、回想の中の少年時代の主人公の視点から描かれる。作中の時系列以前には既に失踪しており、間接的にしか描かれない父の友人の中国人である高万寿。間接的にしか描写されないからこそ、父と高とその妻の関係についていかようにも想像が広がってしまう。
ガスタンクが見える光景を寂しいと感じる感性を幼少期にして持ち合わせていた悦子が最終的に夫を尻に敷く新妻に育ったことは救いを感じさせる。
